Big Questions About Tiny Things

I am in need of your assistance fair reader. I am suddenly surrounded by pregnant women. All of the knitters out there know what I mean by saying the sight of a swollen belly makes my hands ache to knit the perfect sweet item that the baby growing in there just has to have to protect it from the cruel elements here on the outside. Resistance is futile; wee knits will be made. But, what items do new moms actually use? I love knit booties, but do they stay on? Probably not. Anyway, here is where you come in. Please take a moment to answer my poll. Your feedback is greatly appreciated. Do it for the children.

I voted for all but the washcloths. Knitting is such a labor of love that a washcloth that will be used for a few minutes, then laundered and not used again for a little while might not be as special. Hats & cardigans in neutral colors (white, yellow, pink/blue, etc) that can go with many outfits are wonderful. The same goes for socks/booties. I love blankets the best. The girls each have a hand-knit blanket from a relative in their memory boxes, and I used those blankets every day because they were so special to me (and constantly got complements when we went out).

I've made a hat, cardigan, knit mary jane booties matching set for a girl that was well received. It was tan with dark rose trim and flower accents. It was girly but not the typical baby pink that you always see.

For a boy, I made the same hat and cardigan but in dark blue with dark green trim. The cardigan buttons were shaped but I can't remember which shape. I also made a matching blanket for that set. I know mom used the set often. Again, I was trying to avoid the typical baby colors.

i'm all about baby socks. i lurve baby booties to bits but those things just never stay on unless you duct tape them on (and even that is no guarantee)

Oh, I don't have kids, so I really can't weigh in. I would love to know the results of your poll.

I would love to get a knitted anything! Really. All the hand-knit stuff is so soft and stretchy that it's perfect for baby's. My top pick is hat, then cardigan and blanket. You're right- booties and socks never stay on!

I would say blankets except that every new mom I've ever talked to said that she waaay too many blankets and never got to use them all. If it's someone you're close to, maybe ask about the blankets?
I've knitted lots of cardigans and they have always been appreciated. (or at least used, lol!)

Now you're a polster! You never cease to amaze me. I voted for the hat, cardigan, and blanket, but I totally agree that anything knitted is greatly appreciated. And I do recall those tiny socks you made that were just adorable, so you can't go wrong with any of those items.

The shoes in your picture stay on OK. I made Ellie a pair in a yarn with elastic in it.

I think anything handmade is a dream come true! I actually think the washcloths made from cotton are pretty awesome. I made a bunch and used them as burpcloths for my babies. The only thing I wouldn't vote for is the blanket, only because they take forever to knit! Unless your needles are enormous...

Cardigans with matching hats and booties or socks would make an awesome gift! Along with a jumbo pack of diapers...

Happy knitting-
